[read] On the Perception of Probable Things: Neural Substrates of Associative Memory, Imagery, and Perception

Perception is influenced both by the immediate pattern of sensory inputs and by memories acquired through prior experiences with the world. Throughout much of its illustrious history, however, study of the cellular basis of perception has focused on neuronal structures and events that underlie the detection and discrimination of sensory stimuli. Relatively little attention has been paid to the means by which memories interact with incoming sensory signals. Building upon recent neurophysiological/behavioral studies of the cortical substrates of visual associative memory, I propose a specific functional process by which stored information about the world supplements sensory inputs to yield neuronal signals that can account for visual perceptual experience. This perspective represents a significant shift in the way we think about the cellular bases of perception.

I wish I could spend my life thinking about things like this. Someday…

[travel] Antwerpen, Belgium

Oh, the inspiration!

I had the pleasure of traveling to Antwerpen, Belgium to hold a inspiration session with MoMu - A beautifully curated fashion museum housed in one of the most innovative design cities in the world. The session was for MoMu and Friends - the museum’s extended network of business leaders, designers, and students.

I enjoyed a half-day of walking, sitting, and thinking before the session - like a real flâneur. The perfectly weathered architecture paired with the bright sun made it refreshing after a long flight. The photos below don’t do it justice; you must visit yourself!

So, back to the session: Anyone doing business today knows the game is being changed by rapidly evolving technology and the concomitant changes in human behavior. MoMu and Friends is on the cutting edge; they booked Hyper Island to facilitate a session unpacking some of the challenges and opportunities brought on by a digital/ networked world - specifically for the fashion and luxury industries.

I was joined by the brilliant David Erixon and Alex Neuman. We developed the session not to give answers - but to challenge MoMu and friends to create the future of the industry. Of course, I can’t let out all of the secrets here, but I can say that one of the most important pieces of research we examined is the World Values Survey. This shows you how societal values - and thus your customers’ values - are changing over time. This is the single most moving body of research I’ve seen in years. Dig in.

In conclusion, watch out for the Home of The Antwerp Six. There’s going to be another digitally-fueled fashion revolution happening there soon.

(And one last good-enough-to-eat image-based treat.)

[buy] Desk from Urban Wood Goods

So we got this. And it’s awesome.

Many thanks to Urban Wood Goods and their Etsy Shop. They made this table custom for us; it’s over 6 feet long and super thin. The stain is even custom. Finally working from home can involve more than a couch + lap desk combination. (^^)
